What is the History of Covington, Louisiana?

Covington is a smaller city, but its history is just as colorful as that of nearby metropolitan areas. The earliest records of European settlement date back to the 1800s, during the British West Florida period. New Orleans merchant John Wharton Collins established a town in current-day Covington called “Wharton.” However, residents changed the name to Covington in 1816. Many contest the name’s origins today, but many believe the town got its name from General Leonard Covington, a hero of the War of 1812.

The town grew slowly. Its location on the Bogue Falaya brought commerce to the area. Later, in 1888, a railroad came to town. That’s when Covington started to flourish. The old railroad’s right-of-way is now the Tammany Trace bike trail. As Louisiana’s railroad system expanded, many working in New Orleans moved to Covington for small-town living and affordability. That remains true today. Many great artists helped turn Covington into a great cultural epicenter throughout its history. The nationally registered Historic District is home to the city’s Arts District and many galleries.
