What is the History of Baton Rouge, Louisiana?
Baton Rouge’s history dates back thousands of years. Archaeological discoveries indicate early human settlements along the Mississippi, Comite and Amite Rivers. However, modern history didn’t begin until around 1698 when a French explorer led an expedition up the Mississippi River. There, they found a red pole marking the boundaries between tribal grounds for the Houma Bayagoula people. They called the area “le baton rouge,” meaning “red stick.” The name stuck!
European settlement began many years later, around 1721. French colonists established a military and trading post. It wasn’t until 1755 that Acadian refugees moved into the area. Incorporation happened in 1817, nearly 14 years after the Louisiana Purchase. Before becoming part of the United States, Baton Rouge exchanged hands many times. France, Britain, Spain, the Confederacy, and even the West Republic of Florida owned it at some point throughout history. Baton Rouge was the seat of the Reconstruction Era state government after the Civil War. By the 1950s, the discovery of oil in the area led to the city’s expansion as the petrochemical industry boomed.
Today, Baton Rouge is a major economic engine for Louisiana. It’s also an often-visited place with plenty to see and experience.
